Maintenance

Trimming

A simple small clippers and scissors can make a huge difference. By taking the fly-aways and messiness away, it makes for a fuller looking beard. Always trim in a downwards motion with a clippers or use a salon scissors to tidy up where needed.

Combing

Using a wooden comb and brush after using beard oil or butter helps you hair to continue to grow in the direction you want with continued training and brushing. This takes time so regular maintenance is key to a healthier beard.

Washing

Using a designated beard wash specifically for beards is very important as regular shampoo we use on our head hair contains higher concentrations of surfactants which strip more oil from the hair than a mild surfactant in beard shampoo. That 'straw like' feeling you get after using regular shampoo on your beard is from the sulfates in the shampoo that over-clean and get rid of most of the oils left in the hair. Always opt for a mild shampoo or one specifically for beards. I would recommend using beard shampoo at most twice a week as overuse can cause brittleness and breakage.

Conditioning

A beard conditioner is great for every other day washing as it helps coat the hair and makes it much easier for you to comb without tangling the beard hairs. Again, I would recommend a conditioner specifically for beards. Some conditioners have surfactants that clean the hair but in small quantities as to not strip the hair of all of its oils.

Not everyone's beard is the same so this is just a general guide on how to care and look after their beard. Try and see what works best for you and maintain it the way you want to.
